FES Update Newsletter - Winter 2000 - Volume 10, Number 1

Electrical stimulation can be used as both a therapeutic modality and a
"neuroprosthetic" assistive device. The former application utilizes
electrical stimulation as part of a treatment regimen designed to facilitate
neurological recovery and motor relearning, modulate spasticity and promote
muscular strength and endurance. In this instance, the rehabilitative effects
of electrical stimulation persist long after treatment is complete.
