The Need:
Rugby was once a varsity sport at Stanford, and continues to compete against other varsity-level programs, but is a tiered club sport. As a result, the vast majority of the funds needed to support the program, for coaching, medical support, strength and conditioning guidance, travel, equipment and more, must be self-generated. While this is a challenge, we believe Stanford can have the best men’s and women’s collegiate rugby program in the country, both in terms of overall experience for the student athletes, as well as competition on the field.
In pursuit of this goal, our stakeholder alumni and friends of Stanford Rugby have mobilized to build the top rugby complex in the country, thereby establishing a permanent home on campus, and have created the Stanford Rugby Endowment to support the operational needs of the men’s and women’s clubs for the future.
However, the program operating costs continue to grow, and exceed the annual endowment payout. Our student athletes are thereby required to incur significant additional expense, as well as spend time in fundraising efforts that interfere with training time. In addition, our current budget does not allow for the preferred quantity and quality of travel, coaching, medical support, equipment and other resources. To support our vision to become the best men’s and women’s rugby program in the country, and to offer our teams the best opportunity to succeed on and off the field, we ask our alumni, parents, friends and supporters to donate to one of our three funds (details below). For alumni who make gift pledges as part of their five-year reunions, we particularly ask that they consider specifying that some or their entire gift be designated for the rugby program. This generous support will ensure the continued growth and strength of Stanford Rugby for years to come.
The Impact:
The Stanford Rugby program is one of the largest sports on campus, and impacts the college experience of over one hundred Stanford students each year. Stanford Rugby offers its student-athletes valuable development opportunities in leadership, teamwork, dedication and commitment through the physical, mental and emotionally challenging sport of rugby. Our student-athletes are able to experience inter-collegiate competition, international travel, and the development of life-long friendships with their teammates and club members. Through your financial support of the program, you will be helping to provide the Stanford Rugby student-athletes with the best possible resources in order that they maximize their potential and have the most enjoyable and rewarding college rugby experience.
Stanford Rugby Funds:
The Stanford Rugby Endowment Fund (NAANP).
This is primary and preferred source of operating funds for Stanford Men’s and Women’s rugby programs. The Stanford Rugby Endowment Fund was established in 1993 and is a part of the overall Stanford Endowment. Each year, Stanford Rugby receives a payout from the University Endowment based the Fund’s relative balance in the Endowment. The payout funds are used to reimburse coaching salaries, transportation costs, and trainer costs, in that order of priority. Thus, gifts to the Stanford Rugby Endowment are essentially gifts in perpetuity, and help to ensure there will be the necessary financial support for the essential expenses of the Stanford Rugby Men’s and Women’s Rugby clubs into the foreseeable future.
The Stanford Rugby Improvement Fund (HAIDO).
This fund is used for special projects and to cover any unanticipated annual operating budget shortfalls. Examples of special projects recently funded through gifts to the Improvement Fund include the lights at Steuber Field, tour expenses to South Africa and New Zealand, and improvements to the John Doyle Rugby Clubhouse. Gifts to the Rugby Improvement Fund are generally used for specific purposes during the gift year and can be specifically directed by donors for specific approved purposes related to the rugby program.
The Don Bunce Rugby Endowment (KAARZ).
This fund was established in loving memory of Don Bunce, winning Quaterback of he 1972 Stanford Rose Bowl football team, and four-year Stanford rugby star. After graduation from medical school, Don remained close to Stanford Rugby, acting as team doctor for many years, and accompanying the team on tours to Fiji and Australia. To honor Don’s memory as a dynamic player, the annual income distributed from the Don Bunce Rugby Endowment Fund is used to pay for travel and other expenses incurred by Stanford men’s and women’s rugby players as they seek selection on regional and national all-star teams, and in traveling to participate in those teams upon selection. Examples of such expenses include travel for All-American team events and national team trials. Gifts to the Don Bunce Rugby Endowment ensure that Stanford rugby players will have the opportunity to realize their dream of playing for the national and other representative teams.
How it Works: When an individual gives to the rugby endowment, his/her gift creates a fund in perpetuity within the rugby endowment. This produces an ongoing payout to support the team and players. Gifts made to the Rugby Improvement Fund, help provide a revenue source to meet shortfalls of year to year operating costs (until we can raise the endowment enough to fully cover those costs). Gifts can be made at one time or in pledges over multiple years. All gifts to Stanford Rugby are tax-deductible donations and donors will receive a tax ID number from the University.
