Current Research
My research interest is the development and advancement of Structural Health Monitoring techniques and integrating these into Structural Health Management systems. Structural Health Monitoring and Management takes an expansive view of the future in which aerospace systems will consist of "smart vehicles" embedded with sophisticated sensors and analysis networks to holistically self-assess their current and future states. The interdisciplinary nature of this vision has led me to get involved in the areas of composite damage mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, sensor development, signal processing, machine learning, prognostics, engineering risk analysis and decision making.
My dissertation work focuses on interpreting sensor information in order to know what type of damage, how much of it is present and how it affects the future performance of the structure, particularly carbon reinforced composite structures. In order to achieve this, I have designed and performed numerous static and fatigue tests on composite samples with attached piezo-electric sensors. The data gathered so far has led me to develop/implement new methods and algorithms to identify damage type and extent, as well as validate a fatigue progressive failure that I have developed.
