Athletics 65: Horsemanship Beginning Riding

Class Fee: $500.00
Stanford students, faculty, and staff may enroll in Physical Education classes. Athletics 65: This 2-hour per week beginning-level class is designed for riders with 10 hours or less of previous time in the saddle. Emphasis will be placed on learning how to safely halter, lead, groom and tack the horse before & after riding, as well as teaching correct position while riding at the walk. English and Western styles of riding will be offered depending on demand. Basic terminology, ring etiquette and proper use of the aids are also included, as well as balance and strength-building exercises. This is a hands-on class with one-on-one instruction and supervision. Long pants and flat soled boots with a 1″ heel are required. Helmets must be made for equestrian use and provided by the rider.

Space in these classes is extremely limited and enrollment is determined by a lottery system. For all classes, please download and complete an application to be considered for placement, and deliver it in person to the Stanford Red Barn office no later than 12:00 noon the first Wednesday of classes. Days and times are determined after all applications are received, and accepted students will be notified about their first class day and meeting time via e-mail. Do not enroll or pay any fees prior to receiving your acceptance e-mail.
