Medical Spanish Initiative dinner on 8/09/11

MSI sponsors an informal dinner in which all conversations need to be in Spanish. People of all spanish levels are welcome.

Medical Spanish session on 5/24/11

MSI meets formally three times each quarter to focus on vocabulary and phrases which are essential to conducting a medical interview in Spanish. At the beginning of the session, a demonstration patient-doctor interview is conducted by MSI members. Student attendees role play and converse in Spanish following the demonstration to reinforce the vocabulary that was presented. Students of all levels of Spanish fluency are encouraged to attend so that they have the opportunity to serve as both students and tutors. Previous language-learning sessions have focused on such topics as The Medical Interview: Chief Complaint, History of Present Illness, Family History, Social History, Sexual History, General Anatomy, The Neurological Exam, Cardiology and Pulmonary Exams.

Faculty Dinner on 5/17/11

You are invited to our Medical Spanish Initiative sponsored FACULTY DINNER on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, from 6-8 pm at Dr. Oscar Salvatierra's home! He and his wife have been incredibly gracious to host us for a delicious dinner and wonderful evening! :) There will be plenty of Spanish-speakers and non-speakers for you to practice with and mingle with in a casual, informal setting! We will have a special, informal 10 min talk in Spanish by Dr. Irene Corso at around 6:30pm on health care and Hispanics/Latinos in the US. Some of you may have even taken her Medical Spanish class!

Spanish Student Rounds on 4/13/11

Spanish student rounds is held in the same format as the regular student rounds sessions on Wednesday with the exception that the case is presented in Spanish, with translations whenever possible or necessary. All students are welcome to attend Spanish student rounds. Students of all levels of fluency are encouraged to ask questions in Spanish. This event is a great opportunity to practice medical Spanish in a relaxed and informal setting.

Faculty Dinner on 10/25/10

MSI hosts a number of popular events throughout the year. One of our most popular events is a faculty dinner with Spanish-speaking faculty members hosted at their homes. In 2009-10 academic year, we held two events at the home of Dr. Oscar Salvatierra. At least 35 students attended this event, in which students were encouraged to interact with each other and invited faculty members in Spanish. During the spring quarter faculty dinner, MSI also invited Dr. Irene Corso, who leads a Medical Spanish course at Stanford, to give an informal talk in Spanish on Latino health care issues in the US.

Informal Medical Spanish meetings on 9/21/10

MSI has received sufficient interest from members to hold informal Spanish-only lunches separate from the formal sessions. Attendees will provide their own lunches.
