Organization for International Health

Welcome to the Organization for International Health

The Organization for International Health (OIH) is the Stanford medical student organization that focuses on global health issues. We are a group of medical students who are dedicated to promote, educate, and integrate global health issues across the Stanford graduate community and beyond. Working with the new Dean of Global Health Michelle Barry and the new International Health Scholarly Concentration, we are well placed in this burgeoning field. We offer opportunities to network with like-minded students and faculty experienced in international work and to find new and exciting opportunities to travel abroad for aid and research. From healthcare delivery to health policy to health technology to basic education, OIH is the gateway to global health at Stanford Medical School.

In the past several years, OIH has grown to encompass many additional like-minded groups such as Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), and Access and Delivery of Essential Medicines (ADEM). While each separate group has its own priorities and activities, they share members and a common passion for global health issues.

PHR mobilizes health professionals to advance health, dignity and justice, and promotes the right to health for all. Harnessing the specialized skills, rigor, and passion of doctors, nurses, public health specialists and scientists, PHR investigates human rights abuses and works to stop them. The Stanford Chapter of Physicians for Human Rights wants to expand this movement for human rights through investigation, advocacy and accomplishment. The Physicians for Human Rights chapter differs from the PHR class that presents a series of lectures to educate student on different topics. The PHR chapterís activities differ in that we offer a wide variety of events that are less passive and gives students a chance to actually learn actively and contribute.

PSR represents a public health voice that supports the prevention of nuclear war, slow global warming and the degradation of the environment. We often also work on global health and human rights issues in conjunction with Physicians for Human Rights. Last year, Physicians for Social Responsibility hosted speakers on these issues to educate the student community. This year, Physicians for Social Responsibility will be screening three films that are a part of the United Nations Association Film Festival, hosting roundtable dinner discussions with prominent faculty with careers dedicated to the themes that PSR stands for, as well as begin partnering with Global Health Research Foundation (located in San Francisco) on a volunteer project.

ADEM strives to increase awareness of the essential role of the university in determining access to life-saving technologies around the world and push our institution to adopt policies suited to its role as a leading research institution. ADEM does this by educating its own members and the wide university audience about patents and licensing agreements and facilitating conversations between leading scientists, lawyers, and thinkers about the role of the university with respect to its technology.
