Rio de Janeiro Historical Address Locator

Authors: Mithu Datta, Whitney Berry, Ryan Delaney, David Sabeti, Hannah Gilula, Erik Steiner, and Zephyr Frank

The Rio de Janeiro Historic Address Locator allows you to map address locations for 19th century Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The datasets behind this service contain accurate street address information for the range of years between 1849 - 1890.

Mapping your address in the city will provide a spatial context for the person, place or event in question. The point location will be overlayed on the base map, which includes a street network, public spaces, and, at the largest scale, building footprints for the city. You can trace patterns of movement or the morphology of city streets by exploring these locations over time. You can also utilize the coordinates of these locations in a GIS program for further exploration and research.
