Stanford hosted two of its rivals this season in Hamilton and Hobart College at home on separate weekends. On January 8th, the Men’s team took on Hamilton on the first week back from winter vacation. While the team received considerable support from the home crowd, Hamilton played very well taking the first three matches at seed numbers 9, 6, and 3. Hamilton continued this momentum winning at no. 8 and 5, but sophomore Will Macfarlane played well on the glass court to win in straight sets and prevent a clean sweep of the Cardinal. However Hamilton proved to strong as they won the last three games bringing the overall result to be 1-8.
The following weekend the Cardinal took on a much-improved Hobart team. While at the National Championships last year Stanford easily won the matchup, Hobart’s strength clearly showed winning at no. 6, 4, and 2. Sophomore Vihan Khanna brought the Cardinal their first victory in straight sets at the 8 spot, but Hobart responded strongly winning at 9, 7, 5, and 1. Freshman Matt Stevens fought hard and erased a 0-2 deficit to come back and win in five games for the Cardinal. The final result was a disappointing 2-7 loss.
