Audition Requirements

A complete audition consists of orchestral excerpts and a solo piece of your choosing.  Each audition will be approximately 10 minutes long and will consist of two parts:

  • A solo work of your choice. This could be a part of a concerto, sonata, or a solo passage from a major orchestral work.
  • Orchestral excerpts. We have listed below the audition repertoires for each instrument. You can download and print them out using the links shown below. If you have difficulty getting music, contact

As part of the process in preparing for the audition, it is important that you listen to the professional recording of the excerpts. Note that the tempo markings are suggestions only.  The best preparation is to listen to a recording to learn the music in context. Stanford affiliates have access to Naxos Music Library online, which provides music streaming of most major classical repertoire (link for off-campus users).
