The Fantasy Flock was created for the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center's tradeshow booth. The artist's only charge was to create "a painting of face-melting beauty that will draw people from across a crowded hall." Of course, Julie Zickefoose wanted to convey the idea of migration, and depict birds that were not only attractive but imperiled in some way.
