Marc just returned from the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio, where he was “the opponent” for the Ph.D. thesis defense of Juuso Honkanen for his work on “Computed Tomography of Cartilage and Meniscus Using Anionic and Cationic Contrast Agents.”  The defense process in Finland is fairly different from that in the US, consisting of short, formal public statement from the candidate followed by public questioning (up to several hours) by the opponent– essentially, a defense committee of one.  At the conclusion, the opponent gives a summary of the candidate’s performance and a public statement of his/her recommendation.  Everyone was fairly nervous (including the opponent, but especially the candidate), but all went well– congratulations, Dr. Honkanen!
