03-02-15 Joe wins 2015 New Vision Award
Joe had a very successful conference last week, and was awarded the 2015 New Vision Award at the Charleston Conference on Alzheimer’s disease. This is a highly selective award (with money!) which involves a first round of selections to attend the conference and then a study section-like discussion of the remaining entries at the conference. Joe’s proposal was selected unanimously.

Research Interests

Autophagy in neurodegeneration - Autophagy serves to catabolize long-lived proteins and remove aged or damaged cellular organelles inside cells. This “intracellular immune function” is still poorly understood but appears to be important in the cells’ response to stress and survival. We are studying the role of autophagy in neurodegeneration and mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease focusing on Beclin 1, a protein involved in the initiation of autophagy.
