Handbook for Undergraduate Engineering Programs

  • The 2014-15 Handbook will be posted in September 2014. The 2013-14 UG Handbook PDF can be viewed on the Handbooks page; printed copies can be picked up in 135 Huang.


  • New major Environmental Systems Engineering will start Fall 2104.   • Joint CS + X: Starting fall 2014 it will be possible to declare a BAS degree in CS + one of 10 pre-determined Humanities major programs.You can find an overview of the joint degree on the VPUE site. More detail will be released soon.
  • Course lists for Math, Science, Fundamentals, and TiS courses are on the Approved Courses page. Here you will find the courses that are allowed to fulfill School of Engineering breadth degree requirements for the upcoming year. 
  • Three new course developments for spring 2014 and 2015:


  1. NEW FUNDAMENTAL: EE has a new course on offer that will fulfill the ENGR 40 or fundamentals elective requirement in all SoE majors: ENGR 40M, An Intro to Making: What is EE, 3-5 units, Horowitz. The enrollment cap is 24.
  2. EARTHSYS 5/BIO 5 Ecology for Everyone has been changed to course number EARTHSYS 30/BIO 30. This course continues to be an approved science elective choice with the new number.
  3. CHEM 36 is being integrated into CHEM 35 starting Autumn 2014, with an increase in units from 4 to 5. If you are taking CHEM 35 this spring it is recommended that you take 36 as well. The last chance to take CHEM 36 as a stand-alone course will be spring 2015.
  • Links have been repaired for 2011-12 and 2012-13 Program Sheets and Handbooks. If you find other broken links, please email dlazar@stanford.edu.

 UG Handbook
This site contains the handbooks, program sheets, petitions, Opportunities for Students*, links to School of Engineering majors/departments, and lists of approved courses for the Undergraduate Engineering Programs at Stanford University. The handbooks are the definitive source for undergraduate engineering requirements at Stanford. Students may graduate using the requirements listed in any one Handbook that is published while they are undergraduates. Since requirements often change from year to year, it is important for you to reference the Handbook that you intend to follow (see Handbooks in Navigation panel). The Handbooks are available in pdf format on the Handbooks page.

In additional to curricular requirements, handbooks contain information about procedures for declaring an engineering major, transferring engineering coursework from another school, petitioning for waivers and substitutions for requirements (see Petitions in Navigation panel), and for navigating the administrative processes to graduate. They also describes important opportunities* and programs for engineering students, such as  for overseas studies, summer research fellowships, diversity programs, and career placement services.

We hope that you will find the handbooks informative and useful, and we are interested in any suggestions you may have for improvements. If you have any questions about engineering degree requirements or about any of the information in the handbooks, please don't hesitate to contact your advisor or come see us in the School of Engineering's Office Student Affairs, 135 Huang.
