100 million cases of dengue fever per year
250,000 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever per year
- Incidence has quadrupled since 1985

Clinical Manifestations

6-7 days:
- High fever
- Headache
- Rash
- Back and bone pain
Reinfection with one of the 4 strains:
- Dengue shock syndrome
- Dengue hemorrhagic fever
  - Virus infects macrophages and activates memory T-cells
    that release inflammatory cytokines and hypersensitivity reaction
  - Vasculature weakens and ruptures
  - Internal bleeding
  - Plasma loss
  - Shock

Outbreak

Cuba 1981
- Persons infected with dengue-1 virus from 1977-1980 were reinfected with dengue-2 virus
- More than 100,000 got DHS/DSS
- 168 deaths
