The Middle East and Truman

Cameron Sawyer enthusiastically recommends Paul Johnson's "History of the Jews". "For those who may not be familiar with this author, Johnson is a British historian, a Catholic, and a conservative, author of other interesting works including History of Christianity, Modern Times, and The Birth of the Modern. Johnson, like many conservative intellectuals, is a philosemite, but nevertheless this massive study is balanced and objective and extremely fascinating for anyone interested in the role of this unique people in world history". I question the word "philosemite", since I am not aware that he has ever written anything favoring the Arabs or Islam. Many Jewish friends have recommended the book, and I agree that it is a must read, but we should still have a balanced reading list.
