Debate on the Middle East
I apologize to Ed Jajko, the tower of knowledge and sanity is our discussions of the Middle East. He writes:
"Ahlan wa-sahlan and Barukh ha-Ba' to Mr. Margulies. Pace RH, have the WAIS discussions on the Middle East sorely needed knowledge and sanity? Among the things I like about the WAIS discussions and that have encouraged me to contribute to them are the good sense and civility of the contributors and their knowledge and experience. But Ahlan wa-sahlan again to Mr. Margulies, whose comments are pretty much right on the mark. I am reminded of an article that appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, a "letter from America," sometime around 15-20 years ago. I regret that I did not keep a copy or even a reference. One of these days I will sit down with the films of the TLS and find the article again. In brief, the author said that in general the US is what its citizens believe it to be, the land of the free and home of the brave, where people have greater freedoms than anywhere else, including freedom of expression. Except in one area: one has to be very careful what one says about the Jews and Judaism. As Mr. Margulies notes in his comments, portraying Israel in the wrong light is tantamount to being named an anti-semite".
