MIDDLE EAST: The domino effect

US intervention in Vietnam was justified on the grounds that neighboring countries would fall to communism like dominoes. It is claimed that events discredited the domino theory, but now it is being revived to predict the spread of democracy in the Middle East. Some Americans favor giving the dominoes a strong push. Tom Grey says: "It looks like the democracy dominoes may be getting unsteady -- Saudi Arabia is calling for Iraq to be ruled by Iraqis, chosen in a democratic process. But Saudi Arabia does NOT have it own's government chosen by democracy. They are, more intensely than ever, now talking about democratic reform. Follow the Gulf Cooperation Council".
