MIDDLE EAST: The roadmap

The Middle East Roadmap leads along a mountain of difficulties with precipices on both sides. The bombing of a Jerusalem bus and Israeli retaliation in Gaza may push the Bush bus over one side or the other. As I survey the various manifestations of the democratic parliamentary system, my favorites are congressional hearings. They are calm, reasonable and professional, and they provide essential information. Yesterday a hearing of the House International Relations Committee was an unfortunate exception. Representative Robert Wexler (Dem.), who represents a largely Jewish district in Florida, ranted on and on and criticized the relatively even.-handed position of Bush. If he grabs the steering wheel, Bush should hang on to it as tightly as he can.
