The explosive growth of magnetic information storage capacity in the past decades has generated great advances and challenges in magnetic materials and nanotechnology. Bit patterned media (BPM) and Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) are two most promising approaches to reach an areal bit density of >1 Terabit/inch2 in magnetic recording. In the NanoPatterning Initiative we focus on developing nanoimprinting as tool to address the challenges of manufacturing BPM and discrete track disks facing the magnetic recording industry and lithography equipment suppliers. CMN also supports corporate members and collaborators in their R&D in magnetic materials, devices and characterization.
