Smit & Tseng Tour with Eagles

Seniors Melissa Smit and Jossy Tseng have just concluded a week-long tour to England with the USA Rugby Women’s National Team, the Eagles. The tour, dubbed the “First Sports International England Tour,” consisted of test matches against the Nomads, England A, and England Women. The Eagles ended the week 0 for 3, but in the words of Eagles coach Kathy Flores, the tour “will provide us with the type of pressure we need to develop these young players.” Smit and Tseng both earned starting positions at different points throughout the week, with Tseng playing flyhalf and Smit at wing (as well as kicking for points).

Stanford 84, Cal 5

On Sunday,December 2, the Stanford Women’s Rugby Team looked to follow in the path of the Stanford Football team with a dominating win over the California Golden Bears. The game started with a blast, as impact player Ono Nseyo demonstrated the notorious speed of the Cardinals to score a quick try within the first three minutes. The Stanford Women never looked back as they held the Cal Bears scoreless in the first half, while tallying up quite a few tries of their own. Sophmores Kelsey Moss and Jessica Watkins both scored with a show of dominating speed. Senior Lindsey Innes also demonstarted the meaning of sure hands with an impressive catch near the ten meter line and a dash to the try line.

The Stanford Women came on the field for the second half looking to continue their pace and keep the game a shut out. However, the Cal Bears showed their resilience with an agressive push to the try line. The Cardinals regrouped after this lapse, and continued to prove their skill. Freshman Jennifer Cooperrider added a try, as did senior prop Rachel Danford, proving that the front line could also get in on the fun. Standout player Nseyo, continued with her magnetic attraction to the try line, finishing with an outstanding total of seven trys. With a final score of 85-5 the Stanford Women emphatically won their own version of the Big Game.
