Stanford Women’s Rugby headed North this weekend to take on Oregon State and University of Oregon in their first league games of the season. On Friday evening, the Cardinal women faced a very physical Oregon State squad in an exciting game under the light. Stanford struggled to put numbers on the board early on until eightman Frances Wehrwein broke through the Beaver defense to score the first try of the game. Following Wehrwein’s lead, flanker Amelia Villines and center Michelle Teo also scored in the first half with Wehrwein and Villines scoring two tries apiece. As the temperature dropped and tempers rose, the second half proved more challenging for the Cardinal. Oregon State scored two tries, while scrumhalf Bisi Ibrahim scores Stanford’s only try. Flyhalf Jamie Lawrence converted two tries to give a final score of 34-10 to Cardinal.
In the second game of the weekend, Stanford faced the University of Oregon Ducks. The game flowed smoothly from the beginning as Stanford worked on phase continuity. Hooker Ellen Danford, eightman Frances Wehrwein, and wing Smriti Sridhar scored right off the bat. In the second half, the Ducks put up a stronger defense and a more aggressive offense. However, it was not enough to stop Stanford and the team came away with a 43-10 victory. The weekend saw an overall improvement for the team and we look forward to our next league game against Cal on February 17th.
