It was an exciting weekend for Stanford Women’s Rugby as many families came out to support our players over Parent’s Weekend. Stanford’s B side played an experienced mixed side that comprised of players and alumni of UC Davis and Stanford Women’s Rugby. It was a rare opportunity for us to compete against such an experienced team and we put up a good fight. The score was 34-0 at the half, but in spite of this, we persevered and scrum half Michelle Batlle scored a try for Stanford in the second half. Unfortunately, the mixed side scored six more tries and the score was 5-64 at the final whistle. The mixed side made 2 of their 12 conversion. Although we came away from the game with a loss, it was definitely a learning experience for our players and we hope to improve on our performance in future games.
Following this game, was the hotly-anticipated A side game against UC Davis. Stanford was quick to put points on the scoreboard with winger Michelle Teo scoring a try within 2 minutes of kickoff. 3 more tries were scored in the first half by eightman Amelia Villines and fullback Jamaica Osorio — with Villines claiming two of the three tries. In the second half, Stanford picked up even more steam and scored 8 more tries against UC Davis; players Katie Lampert, Aly Gleason, Bisi Ibrahim, Brittany Wheelock, Shola Oyedele and Smriti Sridhar all put numbers on the board, with rookies Oyedele and Sridhar scoring two apiece. Kicker Aly Gleason also made six conversions and the game was concluded with a score of 72-5.
Stanford’s next league game will be held at Chico State on 3rd March (Saturday) at 1pm.
