Second in the Nation for the Stanford Women

Steuber Rugby Stadium – May 9-10, 2014

The Cardinal ended their season with strong performances in the National Semi-final and final matches in the USA Rugby Women’s DI College Championship. On Friday night, the Stanford women faced a tough opponent in American International college, who started off strong with a try early in the game. Stanford quickly recovered, refocused, and increased their physicality in order to win the match 29-15.

In Saturday’s match against long time championship rival Penn State, Stanford entered physically and mentally prepared. Though the scoreboard was lopsided, the Cardinal women gave their best physical performance of the year, driving over rucks and defending with a tenacity and hunger previously unseen. The match was a fight to the bitter end, and the subs had quite a positive impact on the game, helping Stanford to put in work for all 80 minutes, and keeping Penn State from scoring in the last 20 minutes of the match. Many members of the team took the loss well, with high hopes for next season. Final score Penn State 38, Stanford 0.

Overall, the Stanford Women had an excellent season of rugby, ending with a final record of 10-3, a first place finish in the Stanford Invitational, a second place finish at the Champagne Classic, and of course, finishing second in the nation overall. Senior players Maxine Fonua, Michelle Teo, Michelle Batlle, Aly Gleason, and Nina Watkins will be missed for their contributions both on and off the field during their time with the team
