On transit back to England the airplane carrying United's team crashed on take-off in Munich. After two attempted take-offs, the plane crashed through the perimeter fence after it was unable to become airborne on the third attempt. Eight players were killed along with Unitedís club secretary, trainer and coach. Busby himself lapsed into a coma, but his legendary personal strength pulled him through after the last rites had twice been administered to him.

By far the darkest hour of the club, Munich has left indelible scars on thousands of football fans around the world. It was also the defining moment for the club. It is the reason so many reds feel an unbreakable emotional attachment to the club.
