A. Transportation within Stanford University and its vicinity [top]

Stanford University offers a free shuttle service, the Marguerite, to the general public for traveling within its campus and neighborhood. A map showing all the shuttle routes can be found at http://transportation.stanford.edu/images/03-04_Shuttle-Map.pdf. Workshop attendees staying at the Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel can take one of the following routes to campus on weekdays. A shuttle stop is located at the Palo Alto Caltrain Station next to the Sheraton.

  • Line A and Line B: Run every 15 min. from 6:00am to 8:00pm
  • Downtown Express: Runs every 20 min. from 9:00am to 3:00pm
  • Midnight Express: Runs every 30 min. from 8:00pm to midnight

To get to the James H. Clark Center, take Line A or Downtown Express. Get off at the shuttle stop near the intersection of Via Ortega and Serra Mall. The ride is roughly 10 min. To get to the banquet at the Faculty Club, take Line B. Get off at the shuttle stop at the Visitor Parking Lot outside the Tresidder Union. To get back to the Sheraton after the banquet, take the Midnight Express at the same stop. Sheraton is also only minutes away from University Avenue, the main street of downtown Palo Alto.

B. Transportation between Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel and Airports [top]

The two closest airports to Stanford University are the San Francisco International Airport (SFO, http://www.flysfo.com/) and San Jose Airport (SJC, http://www.sjc.org/). They are 22 miles and 16.5 miles away, respectively. Various options for traveling between these airports and the Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel are given below.

San Francisco Airport (SFO)

Option 1: Taxi [top]

  • Call Yellow Cab at (800) 595-1222 or (650) 321-1234 and a taxi will come to pick up at Sheraton. The following information should be given on booking: Name, Airline, Flight # and Departure Time.
  • The designated taxi zones at SFO are located at the roadway Center Islands on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level of all terminals.
  • Total Cost: Approximately $45 to $50 each way per taxi.
  • Estimated Time: 40 min.

Option 2: Door-to-Door Airport Shuttle [top]

  • Call one of the companies listed below and a shuttle van will come to pick up at Sheraton. Reservations are required and should be made at least one day in advance.

  • The shuttle pickup stops at SFO are located on the Departures/Ticketing Level at the roadway Center Island outside all terminals. No reservations are required. (However, reservations are recommended for service after 11:00pm.)
  • Total Cost: Approximately $22 to $27 each way per person ($8 each additional person).
  • Estimated Time: 40 min.

Option 3: Caltrain + BART [top]

  • From Sheraton:
    1. Take the northbound train from the Palo Alto Caltrain station to the Millbrae Caltrain station. ($3.00)
    2. Transfer from Caltrain to BART and take the northbound train to the SFO BART station. ($1.50)
  • From SFO, follow the above directions in reverse.
  • Total Cost: $4.50
  • Estimated Time: 50 min. (excluding waiting time for trains; please go
    http://www.caltrain.com/ and http://www.bart.gov/ for schedules)

Option 4: SamTrans [top]

  • From Sheraton:
    1. Take the Marguerite (Line A, Line B or Midnight Express on weekdays; Shopping Express or Midnight Express on weekends) to the Stanford Shopping Center.
    2. Take the #KX bus to SFO. ($3.50) The locations of the bus stops are as follows:
  • Terminal 2: Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level, Roadway Center Island
  • Terminal 3: Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level, curbside adjacent to Courtyard 4
  • International Terminal: Level 1 at Courtyard A and curbside adjacent to Courtyard G
  • From SFO, follow the above directions in reverse.
  • Total Cost: $3.50

  • The car rental counters at SFO are located on the 4th floor of the Rental Car Center. The Center can be accessed from the Airport terminals via the Airtrain Blue Line, which operates 24 hours every day.

San Jose Airport (SJC)

Option 1: Taxi [top]

  • The taxi zones at SJC are located at Terminal A and Terminal C.

    • Terminal A: Ground Transportation Center located south of the Terminal Garage

  • Total Cost: Approximately $18 each way per person ($6 each additional person)
  • Estimated Time: 30 min.

Option 3: Caltrain + VTA Airport Flyer [top]

  • From Sheraton:
    1. Take the southbound train from the Palo Alto Caltrain station to the Santa Clara Caltrain station. ($3.00)
    2. Take the VTA #10 Airport Flyer. (Free)
  • From SJC, follow the above directions in reverse.
  • Total Cost: $3.00
  • Estimated Time: 35 min. (excluding waiting time for train/bus; please go to http://www.caltrain.com/%20and%20http://www.vta.org/ for schedules)

Option 4: VTA [top]

  • From Sheraton:
    1. Take the #22 or #300 bus from the Palo Alto Caltrain station to the Santa Clara Caltrain station. ($1.50)
    2. Take the VTA #10 Airport Flyer. (Free)
  • From SJC, follow the above directions in reverse.
  • Total Cost: $1.50

  • Each terminal in SJC has a clearly marked Rental Car Shuttle bus stop. Rental Car Shuttles run between the terminals and the Rental Car Center every 10 minutes. Daily hours of operation are 6:00am to midnight.

General Driving Directions to Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel [top]

From Highway 101 North & South:

  1. Exit at Embarcadero Road west.
  2. Follow Embarcadero Road to El Camino Real. Turn right.
  3. Stay in the right lane. (Follow sign for Stanford University / University Avenue.) Sheraton is on the right.
From Highway 280 North:
  1. Exit at Sand Hill Road east.
  2. Follow Sand Hill Road to El Camino Real. Turn right.
  3. Stay in the right lane. At the intersection with Palm Drive / University Avenue, turn left.
  4. Cut immediately into the right lane. The parking lot of Sheraton is on the right.
From Highway 280 South:
  1. Exit at Page Mill Road east.
  2. Follow Page Mill Road to El Camino Real. Turn left.
  3. Upon Embarcadero Road, keep right. (Follow sign for Stanford University / University Avenue.) Sheraton is on the right.

C. Parking at Stanford University [top]

For workshop attendees who plan to drive to Stanford, parking spaces are available on the top floor of Parking Structure 5 at Oak Road. Parking permits are required. (Parking permits are required in all non-visitor parking lots from 6:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday.) A workshop staff will be present at the parking lot from approximately 7:45am to 9:00am on both days of the workshop to give out the parking permits. After parking, take the Marguerite (Line C) to the James H. Clark Center. Get off at the shuttle stop near the intersection of Via Ortega and Serra Mall.

For attendees arriving at other times, please park first at the coin-metered spaces around campus. Parking permits for Parking Structure 5 can be obtained later at registration. The coin-metered spaces closest to the James H. Clark Center are located on the ground floor of Parking Structure 1 at the corner of Campus Drive West and Roth Way. Additional spaces can be found on Lomita Drive opposite to the Cantor Center for Visual Arts. The rate is $1.50/hour. For those attendees who plan to drive directly to the banquet at Faculty Club, please park at the Visitor Parking Lot outside the Tresidder Union. Parking is free after 4:00pm.

From Highway 101 North & South:

  1. Exit at Embarcadero Road west.
  2. Follow Embarcadero Road to El Camino Real.
  3. At El Camino Real, Embarcadero Road turns into Galvez Street. Stay in the left lane and continue.
  4. At the stop sign, turn right onto Campus Drive East.
  5. Campus Drive East turns into Campus Drive West at Palm Drive. Continue.
  6. Upon Welch Road, turn right.
  7. Turn left onto Oak Road at the first intersection. Parking Structure 5 is on the left.

From Highway 280 North & South:

  1. Exit at Sand Hill Road east.
  2. Follow Sand Hill Road to Stock Farm Road. Turn right.
  3. Turn left onto Oak Road at the first intersection. Parking Structure 5 is on the left.

Driving Directions to Parking Structure 1 [top]

From Highway 101 North & South:

  1. Exit at Embarcadero Road west.
  2. Follow Embarcadero Road to El Camino Real.
  3. At El Camino Real, Embarcadero Road turns into Galvez Street. Stay in the left lane and continue.
  4. At the stop sign, turn right onto Campus Drive East.
  5. Campus Drive East turns into Campus Drive West at Palm Drive. Continue.
  6. Upon Roth Way, turn left. Parking Structure 1 is on the left.
  7. If all visitor parking spaces in the parking structure are full, go back out of the parking structure and continue along Roth Way. Turn left at the first intersection onto Lomita Drive. Park at the visitor parking spaces on the right along the road.

From Highway 280 North & South:

  1. Exit at Sand Hill Road east.
  2. Follow Sand Hill Road to Stock Farm Road. Turn right.
  3. Continue to the end of the road. Turn left onto Campus Drive West.
  4. Follow Campus Drive West to Roth Way. Turn right. Parking Structure 1 is on the left.
  5. If all visitor parking spaces in the parking structure are full, go back out of the parking structure and continue along Roth Way. Turn left at the first intersection onto Lomita Drive. Park at the visitor parking spaces on the right along the road.

Driving Directions to Visitor Parking Lot outside Tresidder Union [top]

From Highway 101 North & South:

  1. Exit at Embarcadero Road west.
  2. Follow Embarcadero Road to El Camino Real.
  3. At El Camino Real, Embarcadero Road turns into Galvez Street. Stay in the left lane and continue to the end of the street. Turn left onto Serra Street.
  4. Follow Serra Street to Campus Drive East. Turn right.
  5. Follow Campus Drive East to Mayfield Avenue. Turn right. The parking lot is on the right after the bend.

From Highway 280 North:

  1. Exit at Sand Hill Road east.
  2. Follow Sand Hill Road to Junipero Serra Boulevard. Turn right.
  3. At the second traffic light, turn left onto Campus Drive East.
  4. Follow Campus Drive East to Mayfield Avenue. Turn left. The parking lot is on the right after the bend.

From Highway 280 South:

  1. Exit at Page Mill Road east.
  2. Follow Page Mill Road to the second traffic light and turn left onto Junipero Serra Boulevard.
  3. Follow Junipero Serra Boulevard to Campus Drive East. Turn right.
  4. Follow Campus Drive East to Mayfield Avenue. Turn left. The parking lot is on the right after the bend.
