<- Achebe, Chinua, 1930-2013.
Full name: Albert Chinualumogu Achebe. Ibo writer born in Ogidi, Nigeria, one of the best
regarded African writers in English, also prominant in politics and teaching. His
satiric novels highlight the impact of Western culture on traditional African societies.
- <- Things Fall Apart. 1959.
Achebe's first major work, considered one of the seminal African novels
in English, influential in both African and world literature. Written at least in part as a
corrective to earlier demeaning portrayals of Africans and their cultures in European literature.
It tells the story of Okonkwo, a "big man" in the traditional village of Umuofia, and his undoing
by the force of British colonialism. Followed by two sequels, The Arrow of God (1964) and
No Longer at Ease (1967).
