Real name: John Burgess Wilson.
English novelist, critic, journalist and composer born in Manchester, Lancashire. An educator
in Malaya and Brunei before becoming a full-time writer, he later resided in various European and
A Clockwork Orange. 1962.
Dystopian science fiction novel of the near future concerning Alex, a violent young criminal
who is "cured" by aversion therapy that essentially robs him of free will. Early American editions
dropped the final chapter of the English version, resulting in a darker ending. In this form the
story was adapted to film by Stanley Kubrick in 1971.
