Full name: Ralph Waldo Ellison. Afro-American author and scholar born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, best known for his novel Invisible Man (below).

Autobiographical narrative of an unnamed Afro-American man who feels his race has rendered him socially invisible, detailing his increasing alienation as he comes to view the successive institutions and individuals in which he believes as shams. The Winner of the National Book Award in 1953.
