Importance of tracking data

Background: 

Research question:  I am convinced that we need much more substantial research on student usage, what students actually do when they use software (e.g., tracker data).  We do not even know what features of a piece of software students use when they sit in front of the computer.  I think empirical research needs to be done before we can even begin to address questions of instructional value or pedagogical efficacy.
