LSA 311: Computational Lexical Semantics

Homework! (if you are taking the class for a grade). Do one of these two options.

• Option 1: Do all the reading and send me a note confirming that you read everytyhing, by 5pm Friday the 17th. Write 1 paragraph on some fun research ideas you have about extending any of the work in any 1 (or more) chapters

• Option 2: Do any 2 (or more) of these 4. Mail me in an email (no attachments, just paste text into the body of the email) by 5pm on Friday the 17th.
  1. Day 1 WordNet: Using the hypernym hierarchy, find the lowest common ancestor of senses #1 and #2 of the verb elect. Find the meronyms of all senses of the word university Write 1 pgraph on something interesting or unusual or exciting you notice in WordNet. Include the data examples in your writeup.
  2. Day 2 Vector Semantics: Use one of the available embeddings (querying lsa.colorado.edu (use Chrome, Safari doesn't work)) or downloading the GLoVe embeddings or the skip-gram embeddings. Write one paragraph on something interesting you notice in the similarities (problems, protentially interesting relations, etc)
  3. Day 3 Sentiment: Examine one of the sentiment or affect dictionaries we discussed. Write 1 paragraph on something interesting.
  4. Day 4 Semantic Roles. Go to the FrameNet website. Make sure you look at the Full Text Annotation, the Frame Index, and the Lexical Unit database. Go look at the PropBank data. Write 1 pgraph comparing the treatment of the verb `blame' in the two corpora. Write 1 pgraph on something else interesting you notice in FrameNet. As usual, include the data in your writeup.
