I am a linguist, teacher, editor, and writer. My current linguistics research centers on variation in Germanic languages between analytic and synthetic means of expressing meaning and the extent to which prosodic well-formedness principles might influence speakers' and writers' subconscious choice between alternate forms.

I am presently a postdoctoral researcher at the Heinrich-Heine Universität in Düsseldorf, Germany. I am completing revisions to my successfully defended dissertation (Department of Linguistics at Stanford University) and am a research member of the Crosslinguistic Investigations in Syntax-Phonology (CriSP) group within UC Santa Cruz and Stanford.

My main research interest lies in investigating the relationship between word- and phrase-level phonology in English and German. I'm interested in making explicit the predictions of globalist and localist morphosyntactic architectures, and in understanding the extent to which they accord with empirical and psycholinguistic work by drawing on a variety of methodologies (crowd-sourcing, spoken/written corpora, and laboratory experiments).

My dissertation is about spoken and written variation in the English comparative adjective (e.g. the acceptability in usage between prouder and more proud). I explore the hypothesis that different places in an utterance influence whether an analytic or synthetic form is used, potentially demonstrating that word- and phrase-level properties interact in more complex ways than previously acknowledged.

I was the Mentor Teaching Assistant for the Stanford Department of Linguistics during the 2010–2011 academic year. As part of my responsibilities, I organized a training course for new TAs.

I have assisted in six courses while at Stanford:

While a graduate student at Georgetown, I designed and taught two intermediate-level undergraduate German language courses. I was also part of a research team that investigated L2 acquisition within a genre-oriented, content-based pedagogical environment.

I also have two years of experience teaching in rural K–12 classrooms in San Diego County and preparing underprivileged students for the SAT with eGroup Learning in San José.
