Turgut M. Gür

Turgut M. Gür is a Consulting Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University and the Executive Director of Stanford’s DOE-EFRC Center on Nanostructuring for Efficient Energy Conversion (CNEEC). Previously, he served for ten years as Technical Director for Center for Materials Research (CMR), and later as the founding Technical Director for Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials (GLAM) at Stanford.  He received the Marshall O’Neill award based on his long lasting contributions to Stanford’s research enterprise.

He was formerly a Director and the CTO for Clean Coal Energy and subsequently, Direct Carbon Technologies, which he had co-founded to develop a proprietary carbon fuel cell technology for efficient conversion of coal to electricity with carbon capture.  Before that he was the CTO for H2onsite, a start up developing chemically assisted spontaneous production of hydrogen for distributed generation, and Director and Scientific Advisor for Electro-Oxidation Technologies, a developer of industrial wastewater treatment technologies based on electrochemistry.

Dr. Gür has been an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Ceramic Society (2002-2014), the editor for Solid State Ionics Letters between 1998 and 2002, and has served on several industry, professional and non-profit boards including 10 years on the Board of the International Society for Solid State Ionics. He was the organizer and chair of the 14th International Conference on Solid State Ionics (SSI-14) on Materials for Energy Conversion and Environment, Asilomar, California, June 22-27, 2003, and co-organizer of the 6th, 7th and 8th Symposia on Ionic and Mixed Conducting Ceramics (IMCC), at the 213th, 217th and 221st meetings of the Electrochemical Society in 2008, 2010 and 2012, respectively. He also was the lead organizer and chair of Symposium B4 Electrochemical Utilization of Solid Fuels at the 220th meeting of The Electrochemical Society in Boston on Oct. 9-14, 2011. He will serve again as the co-organizer of the 9th Symposia on Ionic and Mixed Conducting Ceramics (IMCC9) at the 225th meeting of The Electrochemical Society in Orlando, FL. In May 2014. He has edited numerous conference transactions and proceedings, and currently serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for ECS Transactions, and as the Senior Vice Chair and a member of the Executive Committee of the High Temperature Materials Division of The Electrochemical Society.

 

He holds BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and three graduate degrees including a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. He currently holds 9 US patents and has published more than 150 technical articles related to energy conversion processes and materials, fuel cells, electrocatalysis, phase equilibria and transport in oxide ceramics, thin film processing, coal and hydrocarbon conversion, sensors and membranes. He also made more than 130 presentations in national and international conferences, and given more than 70 invited lectures and colloquia.
