The inspiration of our image came from two sources: our love for the film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone, and the desire to demonstrate some features that we were not able to implement for the scanline image. So we decided to do a Victorian scene with chess pieces to pay homepage to the epic Wizard chess game in the Harry Potter movie, we added in in a wine glass to showcase the excellent refraction/reflection/transmittance properties of class that ray tracer is able to  demonstrate. 

We modeled everything except the rose. The background image is a victorian living room picture downloaded from the internet. In the first version with two point lights, the image is a little too dim so we have added another point lights to light up the image. In terms of the advanced techniques, we implemented both depth of field and photon mapping to mimic the visual effect of glass refraction. The focal plane is set at just after the wine glass, which makes the chess piece and the glass in focus and everything else blurred. For photon mapping, the transmittance parameter is set to be 0.9 and the IOR is 1.5. We hope you like the image :)
