Our image was inspired by the various geometries used in classical Chinese architecture. In particular, we want to explore how different shadows they generate under different light settings can create interesting environmental effects. We built up our scene using traditional Chinese models. An area light is used in the background to simulate sun light, which shines through two beautifully-crafted dragon windows onto the calligraphy on the wall. An elegant porcelain vase quietly sits in the corner, reflecting the sun light as well as other objects in the room. Against the wall stands a wooden folding screen which casts a serene shadow onto the wall behind it. Several tables and benches are playfully placed around the room, leaving intertwining shadows on the ground. A tea set serving green tea and a large wine jar filled with Chinese wine sit on the tables, inviting you to come have a drink and enjoy the breath-taking lake view outside of the windows. In addition to the area light, we also used nine point lights inside the room from the ceiling to simulate indoor lighting. This enables us to create soft shadows of the tables and benches while also yielding reflection of the door and bar table of the tea house, which can be seen from the tea sets surfaces in the foreground. Wendi found the models and textures online and Jiaxin took care of importing and positioning the models in our scene. Coding work was done collaboratively.
