Some Notes on Chinese 文化 2
Stanford is translated into a three-syllable word斯坦福, in spite
of its original two-syllable English word.
On what basis do the Chinese decide about the translation?
Others alternatives: 史丹福,思探福,私叹服,etc.
There are three factors to this decision.  First, it must a possible
Chinese word as Chinese does not allow any consonant cluster
like *st(r). In order to produce a sibilant sound, a vowel must
be used.
Second, it must be something in accord with the Chinese
thinking. So there is a semantic dimension that seems to be
more prominent in Chinese than it is in English.
