Communication 200/Technical Notes/Uploading using WS-FTP

When all of your site files are ready to be uploaded, open WS-FTP.

1. Open a new connection. Choose Connect.

2. In the dialog box that immediately opens, enter the following and click OK:

Host Type:  transfer.stanford.edu
User ID:  your SUNet ID
Password:  your SUNet password

3. After connecting, by default you will be brought to your personal leland directory, so you will need to change directories to the Comm 200 site. In the field under "Remote Site," type /afs/ir/class/comm200/WWW/projects/students (case sensitive).

In the students subdirectory, locate your personal folder. The folders are named by individual SUNet IDs. Double-click your folder icon. This is the folder to which you will be uploading your files.

4. On the left side under "Local System," highlight the files and folders used for your website and click the arrow button which points to the right. This will upload your files to your subfolder.

Make sure you have included all the image files used in your web site (JPEGs and GIFs). Also, make sure that your site files and folders have the same relative hierarchy that they had when you designed them. Otherwise, the locations of your files and images relative to one another will have changed, and your links will no longer be correct. Lastly, only upload files (images and pages) and folders that are used in the website. Do not upload preliminary files as these will take up valuable server space.

5. Once all your files have been uploaded, make sure that your index.html file is at the top level of your personal folder, and you are done! To check how your newly uploaded files look on the web, look up http://www.stanford.edu/class/comm200/projects/students/yourusername in a web browser. Your home page will eventually be linked to the "Projects" page on this site.
