Date rates on the subscriber line (the twisted pair from the telephone central office to the customer premises) have increased greatly in the last few years; 52 Mbit/s is now feasible on a line that was originally used for voice-band service! This talk will describe the signal processing methods used to achieve these rates, and some of the outstanding problems (both theoretical and practical) remaining to be solved.
