There is a resurgence of interest in ‘software as a service’ (SaaS) platforms, especially those that allow end-user configurability, some of which becoming commercial successes. Some of these can also be viewed as alternative platforms for rapid application development, empowering business analysts to create ‘situational applications’. The application of these technologies in large enterprises can result in significant improvements in efficiency and new opportunities for application innovation.
We submit that the technology evolution underlying these platforms is ‘dynamic model driven architectures’, which goes beyond traditional MDA by replacing code generation with run-time model interpretation. We describe first our own practical experience with the traditional model based code generation approach; next we demonstrate a (code-less) dynamic model driven architecture, developed in our labs, using which business applications have been developed with significant productivity improvements. We also point to ongoing research in relating the dynamic model based approach to software product lines, and in reasoning about component re-use and evolution at the model level.
Finally, we speculate on the implications of these trends for the future of enterprise IT, software engineering research and the role of the software professional.
