Web Site The URL for this site is http://energy281.stanford.edu/. A site is also maintained at CourseWork, at which grades can be viewed. Course materials will be available on both sites.
Prerequisites The prerequisites for this course are Math 131 or equivalent, or consent of the instructor.
Textbooks There is no textbook for this course. We will be using lecture notes by Rosalind Archer, Tara LaForce, and Jim Lambers, which will be posted on the course web site.
Coursework The coursework will consist of four written homework assignments, a midterm exam, and a comprehensive final exam.
Grading The overall grade for the course is determined by weighting the homework assignments and exams as follows:

Homework assignments10% each
Midterm exam25%
Final exam35%

Letter grades are assigned based on a ``straight scale''. If a student is unable to complete the course due to circumstances beyond his or her control, the instructor may assign a grade of Incomplete.

Policies For homework assignments, the work that you submit for this course is to be your own work, with assistance from the course staff. Giving or receiving aid which makes the coursework significantly easier undermines the learning process and is therefore strongly discouraged. Please use your common sense and remember that the primary goal is to learn the course material. At all times, you must abide by the Stanford Honor Code.

All assignments must be submitted by the given due date. Every day that an assignment is late, 10% of the total points allotted for that assignment will be deducted from the overall grade. However, each student is allotted three days for the entire quarter, to be used for any needed extensions, for any reason without penalty. Please use these days wisely, for additional extensions must be granted in advance by the instructor and will only be granted if deemed absolutely necessary.

In-class exams must be taken at the regularly scheduled time except in extreme cases. Due to the additional time that is granted, makeup exams will be more difficult.

If you have any questions regarding course policies, please direct them to the instructor.
