This course, German Language and Culture III, fulfills Stanford's language requirement and counts toward the German Studies major and minor requirements at Stanford. Questions regarding the German major may be directed to the Undergraduate Advisor, Amir Eshel. As the third course in the first-year series, this course focuses on crucial cultural information and vocabulary for living in German-speaking countries; on the future tense (Futur), passive voice (Passiv) and on indirect discourse in subjunctive (Konjunktiv I & II). We will review and strengthen our knowledge of structures we learned in German 1 and 2. Specifically, Chapters 11-14 of Deutsch-Na Klar! by Di Donato will be covered in this course. As a course fulfilling the German major requirements, this course includes a brief introduction to German belles lettres. We are reading a selection of German poetry in The Penguin Book of German Verse (German poems with English translation in the footnotes). Both books are available at the Stanford Bookstore. This course also aims at providing you with a working knowledge of the history and culture of the German speaking people, so that we will be able to engage native speakers of German at an intellectual level when you encounter them. You shall feel comfortable using contemporary German and may eventually take part in Stanford Overseas Studies Program in Berlin. Undergraduate Mentor: Sandy Schmidt Get to know your mentor! |
