History 138A
Midterm

Due: at beginning of class (10am) on Monday, July 28, 2003.

Each of your three responses should be between
500 and 1,000 words.
(Typed & double-spaced, of course.)

I am looking for thoughtful and thorough engagement
-- your own thoughts, in your own words -- with the
material covered (through 7/23, WWII and its aftermath)
in the readings and in class.

The reponses need not be masterpieces of prose, but
they should be clearly written and well organized.

Use specific evidence to back up your arguments as
much as possible in the space available.

Use parenthetical in-text references; for example:
(Naimark, 103) (Rae, 47) (Rodrigue) (Lecture, 7/21).
Full bibliographic information isn't necessary as long
as the reference will be clear to me.

Making use of writings not assigned for class is OK,
but not at all necessary; concentrate on materials from
the course.

Do not discuss the questions with your classmates or
get any outside assistance.

Be sure to sign the honor code and include it
with your responses.

Answer the following 3 questions :

1) Compare and contrast Ferdinand and Isabella's policies toward
Jews with Hitler's plans for their forced deportation.

2) Compare and contrast the periods 1912-23 and 1939-47
(both approx.) in terms of the nature of ethnic cleansings
and international responses.

3) "Ethnic cleansing depends upon popular support as much as
on political and military leaders." Discuss, using at least
three cases in support of your arguments.
