Jan. 1949 -- agensts of the regime assassinate Hasan al-Banna

23 July 1952 -- military coup brings Gamal Abdel Nasser and Free Officers to power. SMB supports coup at first

June 1965 -- Sayyid Qutb released from jail

29 August 1966 -- Sayyid Qutb executed after conviction for a plan to overthrow regime

June 1967 -- Arab-Israel war discredits Nasserism

1968-72 -- student movement, including an Islamic current

Sept. 1970 -- Abdel Nasser dies. Anwar al-Sadat becomes president

15 May 1971 -- "Corrective Revolution." Sadat consolidates power and allies with the SMB against Nasserites and leftists

October 1973 --war with Israel. Student Islamic groups begin to proliferate with encouragement of regime

Nov. 1977 -- Sadat travels to Jerusalem

April 1979 -- Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. Islamic movement breaks with regime

June 1981 -- Muslim-Christian sectarian clash at Zawiya al-Hamra alarms the regime

September 1981 -- opposition leaders of all stripes, including Islamic movement, arrested

6 Oct. 1981 -- Khalid Islambuli of the Jihad organization assassinates Sadat

1984 -- alliance of SMB and traditionally secularist Wafd

1987 -- SMB switches to Socialist Labor Party

1992 -- assassination of secularist journalist Faraq Fuda, low-level insurrection begins in middle Egypt
