Useful surveys of the history of eastern Europe and of nationalism

NATIONALISM
More ink’s been spilled on this subject than you can shake a stick at. Here are some of the more important and useful texts of recent years: Useful reviews of the literature can be found in Anthony Smith's works and, from a more "modernist" perspective, in John A. Hall, "Nationalisms: classified and explained," Daedalus (1993): 1-28. [ON RESERVE]

Some of these books have a good deal to say about eastern Europe (e.g., Brubaker, Seton-Watson). The following two collections are also good starting places. Each has chapters on specific countries, plus interesting introductory essays by Peter Sugar: GENERAL EUROPEAN HISTORY
