Each link in this document points to a list of printed literature: books, articles, monographs, etc. Some of these works pertain directly to Ovid, while others do so only indirectly. Our annotations suggest what distinguishes each entry.


  1. Some Dictionaries of Literary Theory and Related Terms
    By Lowell Edmunds, Rutgers University. A partially annotated bibliography of secondary and reference works on literary theory, as opposed to cultural theory.

  2. Tools of the Trade for the Study of Roman Literature
    By Lowell Edmunds and Shirley Werner, Rutgers University. Like Edmunds' theory page, this list is partially but usefully annotated. It focuses on reference works and philology, but also covers literary history.

  3. Classics Reference Guide
    University of Chicago. A list of reference works useful for students of classics.

  4. Biblioteca Classica Selecta
    Lists primary and secondary material (and reference) for research in the classics. A nice touch is the description of each field within the discipline and what principles guide the organization of its literature.

  5. Diotima Bibliography
    University of Kentucky. This bibliography lists material by subject matter and provides links to other bibliographies, online articles, and thematic search engines.

  6. Diotima: Ovid Bibliography
    University of Kentucky. Lists recent articles and books on Ovid and gender issues.

  7. TOCS-IN
    University of Toronto. An archive of the tables of contents from over 150 classically oriented journals.

    Johns Hopkins University Press and The Milton S. Eisenhower Library. A searchable database of current journals in the humanities, with links to full electronic articles.

  11. Gnomon: Bibliographische Datenbank
    Gnomon Online. This is a searchable database containing works published by the German classical press, Gnomon. It delivers results with cross-listed links, so a simple search yields well-organized, in-depth material.

  12. The Database of Classical Bibliography
    CUNY Classics. This is the web page for a project that will transfer volumes 45-60 (1974-1989) of L'Anée Philologique to CD-ROM.

  13. Select Bibliography of Sources in Classical Mythology
    Michigan State University. Annotated and concise, this site lists works by ancient mythographers and some modern treatments of their work.

  14. A selected List of Poetry with a Classical Basis
    By Lisa Auanger, University of Washington.

  15. Ulrich Schmitzers Bibliographie zu Ovid
    By Ulrich Schmitzer, Erlangen University. An exhaustive bibliography, organized by topic. However, without annotations the information here is difficult to browse.

  16. Bibliography of Apollonius Rhodius
    A vast bibliography on one of Ovid's Hellenistic influences. Also covers other Alexandrian poets and their poetry in general. Not searchable, and difficult to browse due to the volume of information it offers.

  17. Bibliography of Virgilian Scholarship: Index
    University of Pennsylvania. Although only partially completed, this site is useful thanks to its clear organization by date and subject of material.

  19. Children's Books on the Ancient World: A Selective Bibliography
    By Diane Arnsons Svarlien, University of Kentucky.

  20. Sean Redmond's Recent Ovidian Bibliography
    By Sean Redmond, NYU. A thorough survey of recent Ovid studies, this bibliography treats works published since 1990.
