SPRING 2002-2003 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The objective of this course is to prepare you to make oral presentations of various types, with correction and guidance from the instructor. You will have the opportunity to learn and practice the content and delivery skills that are fundamental to effective public speaking. Emphasis will be on fluency and intelligibility as well as organization and effectiveness. We will focus on: designing and organizing material to fit the audience and time limits, delivering material using appropriate verbal and non-verbal expression, interacting appropriately with the audience and speakers, improving spoken proficiency (pronunciation, word usage, grammar), and gaining more confidence in speaking before a group. As extensive practice is the key to success, you will give talks
every week, which will be evaluated by you, your peers and the instructor. You will be
videotaped for evaluation and feedback several times. In order to receive credit for this course, you are expected to: Any student who needs special help getting to class, hearing in class, seeing written material, or doing some other tasks should discuss the need with the instructor the first week of class. The student must obtain professional diagnosis of the need area at the university's Disability Resource Center.
