                                    Normal                                                                                                Transposed Arteries and Ventricles

Result: Arteries are switched, but so are ventricles, so deoxygenated blood ends up going to the

lungs and oxygenated blood to the body; two wrongs can make a right.

Associated Defects

  • high incidence of arrythmias and conduction defects
  • coronary arteries are reversed so as to supply their appropriate ventricle
  • ventricular septal defects (now unadvantageous) occur in 80% of cases
  • tricuspid valve abnormalities occur in 90% of cases; ventricle that pumps blood to body must have very high pressure, which the tricuspid valve is not used to.
