PROFESSOR: Roger Blandford
Office: Varian 324/SLAC Kavli Bldg 318 Email: rdb3@stanford.edu TA: Jane Dai Office: Physics-Astrophysics Bldg (Varian II) 204 Email: cosimo@stanford.edu COURSE MEETING: MW 2:15pm-3:45pm Hewlett 103 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The GOAL of this course is to teach the fundamental principles of classical continuum physics as applied to elasticity and fluid mechanics. We will cover a lot of territory necessarily with little depth. My intent is to explain the fundamental principles that govern these subjects and to give one or two illustrative examples which will demonstrate how they can be applied in practice. The pattern of the course is simple. We will cover one topic in each of nine weeks. Each Monday lecture we will derive the fundmental laws and each Wednesday lecture we will discuss an application. Wk 1 Elastostatics - Wk 2 Elastodynamics - Wk 3 Foundations of Fluid Dynamics - Wk 4 Vorticity - Wk 5 Turbulence - Wk 6 Waves - Wk 7 Supersonic Flow - Wk 8 Convection - Wk 9 Magnetohydrodynamics - Other materials may be substituted. TEXT BOOKS & REFERENCES: The lectures will follow closely lecture notes that Kip Thorne and I wrote over a twenty year period at Caltech and which are available on the web. Each week corresponds to a single chapter. However, I will only cover a fraction of the material in each chapter. I will make all the the chapters available at the start of the course in their current form. I do expect to modify several of the chapters as we go along and I will substitute revised versions on CourseWork. Three additional textbooks that are the level of the class are Landau & Lifshitz: Elasticity Landau & Lifshitz: Fluid Dynamics Tritton: Physical Fluid Dynamics These should be on reserve in the library. HOMEWORK & SPECIFIC CLASS RULES: I will hand out a homework every Wednesday to be discussed the following Monday in class and due in class on the Wednesday. (There will be no homework for Wk 9 and I will not examine the material of wk9.) Some specific class rules are that discussion of homeworks is encouraged. However you are required to write up your solutions quite independently. The final will be closed book except that you may use any material that you have written and copies of the class notes. The Honor Code will be assumed. OFFICE HOURS: I plan to be in my office, Rm 324 Varian, 12-1p on Tuesdays. Jane will have her office hours 2:15-3:15p on Tuesdays and Thursdays. EXAM: There will be no midterm and the final will be a three hour. in class exam, (tentatively scheduled for Thu 22 Mar 12:15-3:15p). The homeworks and final carry equal weight for the final grade. ADDITION: I cannot lecture Wed. 10 Jan. The first lecture will be Mon. 15 Jan. I may have to reschedule some other classes due to unavoidable travel. Jane and I are looking forward to working with you on this course over the coming quarter. |
