The Portfolio & the "Writing Inventory"
| The Portfolio: At the end of the quarter you will gather together your first and final versions of the quarter's three assignments and put them in order.   You will prepare a table of contents for this collection, number all the pages, label and date each piece of writing, put a cover sheet on top indicating your name, the date, the course title and number, and the instructor's name.   Inserted between the cover and the first draft of the first assignment will be your "Writing Inventory" (see the following paragraph for an explanation of the "Writing Inventory").   In other words, on the second page of the portfolio will begin your "writing inventory."   Because neatness of presentation counts, insert this collection in a folder, but one not too bulky (a folder, not a binder).   Portfolios will be due in the mailbox outside my office by 2 pm on December 12th. Your portfolio will account for ten percent of your grade.   For an explanation of how the portfolio will be assessed, go back to the main page and go to "Grading of portfolios" under "Grade policies." | The "Writing Inventory": The purpose of the writing inventory is to create a self-assessment of your progress in the course.   This final summation can be as short as one page or as long as three.   For information about the writing inventory, first review pp. I-3 through I-5 of the course handbook introduction.   Then use pp. I-5 through I-27 as an inspiration for creating your own.   Pay special attention to exercises 1.1 (p. I-8), 1.2 (p. I-12), and 1.3 (p. I-27).   The writing inventory will consist of a distillation of the suggestions, compliments, criticisms, and comments you received throughout the quarter from the instructor as well as from your peers.   It also should include your own insights about your writing.   It is not necessary for you to keep an ongoing writing log during the quarter (described on pp. I-4 and I-5), but you might find keeping one helpful for fulfilling this assignment.                                                                                                                                                                                                         |
