FIRST Tech Challenge team 5206, The Knights of Ni, is advancing for the first time to the World Championship! The OHS Robotics Club, started in 2012, organizes a team of OHS students, both local and distant, to participate in FIRST Tech Challenge, a robotics competition for grades 7–12 in which teams design, build, and program a robot to compete in an annual challenge. This season’s challenge is Cascade Effect, in which robots attempt to score as many golfball- and baseball-sized plastic balls as possible into goals of various heights. The OHS team participated from March 27–29 in the West Super-Regional, involving 72 of the best teams from around the western area of the US. While the team had a rough set of qualification matches, they were able to pull through in the end, when the 1st seeded team selected them to join their alliance in the elimination rounds. The alliance of three teams ended the day as the event winning alliance, allowing the team to advance to the World Championship, which will be taking place in St. Louis from April 22 to 25.
