Second City knows that humor is a powerful way to convey truth – and make it feel safer to do so. The organization takes a non-humorous, but important, HR process and puts a humorous spin on it to reveal truth. It created a yearly mechanism to have its employees review the managers in a funny way. Leonard says Second City realized that the only way that such a review was going to be successful in their environment was if it was done as a comedy show.
Therefore, at the Second City holiday party every year, the bar staff puts on a show where they parody the sketches that were on stage that year to take shots at all the powerful people in the organization. Leonard says:
